In fact, all the modifications you ll make to BalloonShop occur at the business tier because we ve slipped in the data and presentation tier modifications already. In the material settings for the ground plane, go to the Shadow section and check the box for the Shadows Only option. This pretty much does what we want, as only shadows will now render on the ground plane. Press F12 to test the shadows if you like. Shadows can be tricky to configure, because you have to have the correct material settings to receive them, and also the correct settings in the light casting them. In my own experience, I have found that sun lamps using ray shadows work best when casting shadows on shadow-only surfaces. Sun lamps seem to be the only kind that can cast shadows that are dark enough. If using another type of light, you may like to experiment with whether the lamp casts buffer or ray shadows, as these have differing results (buffer shadows are faster and less accurate, whereas ray shadows are calculated by true raytracing). To give the shadow soft edges, change the Softsize and Samples settings in the lamp settings to something like 5 and 7, respectively. Softsize is the amount of blur on a shadow edge, whereas Samples represents the number of passes, or the quality of the blur. Each version of the JDE and version of the JDE component pack comes with a set of default simulators configured to work with the environment. RIM provides many more simulators, however. These are very useful for testing how your application functions with different screen resolutions or input methods.
