The problem, which is insidious, is that the supplied assertions destroy the last error value In the preceding case, the "_ASSERTE ( FALSE != lRes )" executes, shows the message box, and changes the last error value to 0 Thus in debug builds, the UI thread always appears to hang, whereas in the release build, you see the cases in which the parameters passed to SendMessageTimeout are bad The fact that the last error value is destroyed with the system-supplied assertions might never be an issue in the code you write, but my own experience has been different two bugs that took a great deal of time to track down turned out to be related to this problem.

Fortunately, if you use the assertion presented later in this chapter in the section "SUPERASSERT," I'll take care of this problem for you as well as give you some information that the system-supplied version doesn't ASSERT_KINDOF and ASSERT_VALID If you're programming with MFC, you'll run into two additional assertion macros that are specific to MFC and are fantastic examples of proactive debugging If you've declared your classes with DECLARE_DYNAMIC or DECLARE_SERIAL, you can use the ASSERT_KINDOF macro to check whether a pointer to a CObject-derived class is a specific class or is derived from a specific class The ASSERT_KINDOF assertion is just a wrapper around the CObject::IsKindOf method The following code snippet first checks the parameter in the ASSERT_KINDOF assertion and then does the real parameter error checking.

Database configuration settings are stored in database.yml. If you re using SQLite, it s not necessary to change these settings at all, but it s worth looking at them nonetheless. If you re using MySQL, you ll definitely need to take a look in case there are changes to be made, so open up config/database.yml in your editor. Ignoring the comments, you ll notice three main sections in database.yml, called development, test, and production. These sections represent the three different environments your application can run under. For example, while developing, you want your application to return verbose error messages and automatically detect changes you make to the code. In production (better thought of as being a deployment environment), you want speed, caching, and non-verbose error messages. The test environment is provided so that testing can occur on a different database away from your regular data. The section you re interested in right now is the development section, as we ll only be using the development environment throughout this chapter. You need to edit the details in the development section to reflect those necessary to connect to the database you created previously. You can observe, for example, that customers 2 and 78 were handled by the same group of employees, because for both customers, grp is 2 . Remember that you should use the sample tables in the InsideTSQL2008 database only to check the accuracy of your result . For performance estimations, use the tables you created earlier in tempdb by running the code in Listing 7-1 . Like before, also with this problem the performance measures I will mention were measured against the tables in tempdb . The first solution doesn t make any use of temporary objects; rather, it implements a classic relational division approach applying reverse logic with subqueries:
