Phew! In this chapter, you have seen how Reporting Services has matured in SQL Server 2005. We started by looking at what SSRS 2000 provided as a level set. Then, we went on to see what was new in SSRS 2005. In a little over a year, the SSRS team has added a lot of new functionality that will make any developer or DBA who has to create reports very happy. Finally, with the new integration with SQL Management Studio, tighter integration with Analysis Services, and newfound developer and end-user enhancements, you should be able to find a use for Reporting Services in any of your Business Intelligence projects.

Data interpretation and the massaging of said data to be interpretable is referred to as business intelligence (BI). Under the generic heading of business intelligence, SQL Server 2005 introduces a suite of technologies designed to support the development and administration of BI applications. Reporting Services and Integration Services (SSIS) can be classified as elements of BI, but the cornerstone of this database s BI services is SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services (SSAS, where within Microsoft each letter is pronounced es-es-ay-es). Within Analysis Services are mechanisms for exploiting Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) and data mining. The functionality associated with just the OLAP features of Analysis Services is daunting in scale, and hence OLAP is the Analysis Services mechanism reviewed in this chapter. Any Analysis Services endeavor can be broken down into a set of tasks associated with application administration and with application development. As has been discussed previously, SQL Server 2005 ships with two tools designed to facilitate these tasks: SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS): This tool supports application administration including the viewing of data and the creation of Multidimensional Expressions (MDX), Data Mining Extensions (DMX), and XML for Analysis (XML/A). Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS): This tool supports application development by allowing the core components of an Analysis Service project to be defined (data sources, data views, dimensions, value, cubes, etc.).
